When it comes to New York City love stories, few are as effortlessly chic and intimate as this one. This fashion-forward couple skipped the big wedding for a stylish NYC city hall elopement that felt personal, joyful, and true to them.

Their day began at Nine Orchard, a beautifully restored boutique hotel nestled on the edge of Chinatown in Lower Manhattan. In true modern-romance fashion, they got ready together— hanging out with their families and helping each other with the finishing touches. The energy was relaxed and joyful, with the kind of intimacy that makes an elopement day feel even more special.

The bride, a professional event planner, styled their looks down to the details. She wore a fashion-forward, sleek gown paired with velvet heels and a beaded white purse to complete the modern look.

Once ready, we stepped out into the heart of the city and wandered through the vibrant streets of Chinatown. The walk to Manhattan City Hall was full of the texture and the rhythm of daily New York life. It was unfiltered and cinematic in the best way.

Inside the Manhattan City Clerk’s Office, there’s the row of iconic green couches tucked against the walls of the waiting area, where couples sit patiently for their number to be called. It’s not what you’d expect to be a photo-worthy location, but it’s become an unexpected icon of the NYC courthouse wedding experience. And for this couple, it became the perfect spot to slow down and take it all in.

We used a few quiet minutes before their ceremony to create a mix of posed and candid portraits right there among the buzz of the room. They curled into each other on the couch, shared a laugh, and then held still for a moment that felt more editorial than courthouse. The textures of the original woodwork and the bride’s modern dress against the green upholstery created an effortlessly stylish moment.

Alongside those posed frames, we also captured a few unguarded moments of just the two of them- their final moments before becoming husband and wife. There’s something beautiful about mixing intention with spontaneity in a place like this.

Shot on a blend of digital and 35mm film, the images from this little corner of City Hall feel honest, editorial, and timeless. In the midst of the bustling waiting area, these two made a little magic of their own- proof that even a row of courthouse couches can hold space for something extraordinary. They exchanged vows in front of just their moms and the officiant. It was short, sweet, and deeply meaningful. A reminder that love doesn’t need a stage, just presence and intention.

We took family portraits right across the street at the small park. I couldn’t even keep count of the number of compliments the bride received on her dress!

Afterward, we explored the neighborhood for portraits as we headed back to Nine Orchard. They looked straight out of a Vogue editorial against the historic buildings and they soaked in being married with the city as their backdrop.

The celebration continued with a quick Uber ride to Hearth, a cozy and elegant restaurant in the East Village. There, the bride had planned an intimate dinner for 25 of their closest friends and family. Every detail was intentional—from the candlelit tables to the custom menu and the relaxed, joyful vibe. It felt less like a wedding reception and more like the best dinner party you’ve ever been to.

Some of the most emotional and timeless moments from the day were captured on 35mm and 120 film. There’s something about film that just hits differently- it brings a softness, a grain, and a bit of nostalgia that can’t be replicated. From the quiet moments in their hotel room to their first steps as newlyweds on the courthouse steps, the film photos added a layer of romance that perfectly matched the tone of their day.

This NYC courthouse wedding was a masterclass in doing things your own way- fashionable, authentic, and full of joy. Proof that a city hall elopement can be just as meaningful (and photogenic) as any large wedding.
